OpenAI's nonprofit board abruptly fired chief executive Sam Altman, saying he had not been 'consistently candid' with directors. The announcement, with no advance warning to Microsoft or staff, triggered one of the most dramatic governance crises in tech history.

The backlash was immediate and near-total. Microsoft offered to hire Altman and any departing colleagues; more than 700 of roughly 770 employees signed a letter threatening to follow him out the door unless the board resigned and reinstated him.

Within 72 hours the coup collapsed. Altman returned as CEO, and the board that removed him was reconstituted with new directors. The episode exposed the fragility of OpenAI's unusual nonprofit-controls-a-capped-profit structure — and how much power had concentrated around a single founder and a single cloud partner.

For the wider industry, the crisis was a warning about governance at labs racing toward artificial general intelligence: the entities building the most consequential technology of the era were, in structural terms, improvising.
